I think it’s time to invest in a couple collapsible shelters. I also want a hard shell roof top tent now. Wet ground sucks.
Two days of solid rain makes for a high river. There’s the drop in water level overnight.
The drier days included some exploring to find a waterfall and some other nice sights
Steaks were cooked over a fire. Good lord that was good.
I definitely need a bigger/more powerful truck. Also one that doesn’t fill its foot wells with water in the rain. Also I’m tired of carbs.
Man I love BC. This was fun, but I think the next trip will involve staying in something other than a tent.

The answer is right in front of you hehe. If a Civic can take the dirt roads, it isn’t offroading.
Though I love seeing Oppos’ takes on the Pacific Northwest. It’s such a different environment than what we get here just beyond the foothills of the Appalachians but there’s just enough familiar that I think I could learn to like it.
Like this photo. Here it’s almost all solid monolithic masses of granite poling up through the terrain and it’s just gentle hills with isolated mountains with the peaks getting more frequent the more you go north.
The homogeneous pine canopy is similar but we get the less pretty variety
Oh, and the soil is waaay different.

I think you need a Mitsubishi Shogun (Montero to you) LWB commercial. It’s got rear doors and a tailgate, but has a fixed bulkhead behind the front seats, rear seats removed and paneled out.
Rear door and side windows removed.
Stick a bed in and some cooking and refrigeration equipment in, sorted.
Icelandic Pajero campers for hire conversion.

You’ve got that dude packed to the rafters!
Those pics are beautiful - thanks for sharing!

The civic made it to the campsite, but it would’ve struggled to make it much further down the roads we were on. But overall this trip was definitely less off-roady than others I’ve been on lately.
That’s an area I’d definitely like to check out sometime. Maybe I’ll get to do a US roadtrip or two if the world gets less crazy

I wish we had the1st, 2nd, and 4th gen Montero/Pajeros here. We only got the 1st as a 2 door in Raider form, and the 3rd gen. I think a 2nd gen 4 door would be ideal for me, but I’d need to import from the states. But that one does look very cool. I’ve considering getting a 3rd gen and swapping the front end to a 4th gen if it’s not too expensive

Yup it was definitely pretty tight.
Thanks!

What I’m hearing:
I love where I live. There’s too much around to bore me.
The geography is no exception. Ash explained it better than I could:

You get thick red Georgia clay in one area then you get into a Piedmont soil type then you have giant chunks of granite that have been broken down enough to permeate the soil. The rocks aren’t as bright as the ones you’ve shown but you get tons of different types.
And you don’t get any natural lakes and only a few natural rivers and creeks around here. Few mountain streams too.

Not enough ground clearance for what I’ve started getting into. My trucks skid plates have seen some use, so I don’t want less clearance than I have. I want the same clearance, more power, more space, AC, and cruise. And more reliability

Makes sense. Here, I once found a public dirt road. It was smoother than some paved roads. I’ve looked and I can’t find another unpaved road, much less a publically accessible offr oad trail, for nearly an hour out. If you own an offroad vehicle you’d have to make 3 or 4 hour round trips to find something even mildly challenging. Or know someone with some land that escaped sub urbanization .

Dang. Now I want to go camping! When my son was in Scouts, we went several times a year. My camping vehicle was my WRX. https://oppositelock.kinja.com/rally-camping-car-1690208553
It got better once I bought a rooftop carrier.
When we’re car camping, we take a pop-up shelter, a large tent, an inflatable mattress, a small table, and all the kitchen supplies. The pop-up makes it easy to stay dry even when it’s raining heavily. We just position it over the entrance to the tent, so it becomes a large covered porch. An extra tarp functions as a floor. I also have both net and solid walls for the pop-up, so it can become a bug-free room with plenty of shade.

There were a couple guys with a lifted jeep camped near us. They had one shelter for the tent, and another to go right behind the Jeep and then opened the tailgate up and had led light strips on the inside of the tailgate to light everything up, and the cooler right there. Little folding table for their stove. It was a smart looking setup. Definitely easier than our poles and ropes and tarps

That sounds pretty nice. I think that if I were going to keep it over the vehicle, I’d look into getting a swing awning.

Oh wow. Here we’ve got tons of publicly accessible forest service roads, plenty that most cars can do, and plenty that you need low range and decent ground clearance to get up. But the real cool ones that get to the best views, you need a real 4x4. Now that I’ve got up a couple, I’m hooked

Oh I quite like those. I’ve been looking for photos of camping rigs and quite enjoyed this one with a similar awning

Makes me want to drive off again.
Regarding hard shell roof tents, I went for a folding tent, simply because the SWB Pajero/Montero/Shogun/Raider has a really short roof. That way I was able to put 2 cases on the roof to save some space
, as I travel with a friend and a large dog

But if you get a more powerful and bigger truck, you won’t have a Raider! :O
Also, that sure is a purdy area...

does look good

You'd be driving 5 hours round trip for something challenging unless you know a guy here. I'm kind of jealous but I also don't plan on owning an off-road vehicle any time soon.
